Author Robert Kunzig explains the U.S. West is in a long-term drying. From satellite photos, to on-the-ground science, trees and all vegetation are drying, browning, and often burning. Rivers are declining. The U.S. Southwest may be entering a dry to drought period lasting hundreds of years or more. Good book, good interview.
